Ugh

So, one of my managers has been treating me like hell lately.
We used to get along really well, I don't know what happened.
And it only seems to happen when my GM isn't working.
Like today. My GM has sundays and mondays off.
The particular manager I'm speaking of decided to put me on cabinets. I knew that was a recipe for disaster right away.
you see, grill area isn't my specialty. i'm not extremely great at it.
Everyone except me managed to wander off, and were doing things other than their jobs. So i was initiating, catching, and doing cabinets.
she starts bitching at me because i'm being too slow, and then goes up front, and on her way up, she yells, "I'm going to go print off a KVS report!"
so she printed it, and then yelled "Congratulations, Mr. Perkins ! You've brought it up from 30 seconds to 75!"
ugh.
that's only one example.

another example takes place on a saturday morning. it was pretty slow. and she was yelling at someone because their shirt was wrinkled. then she came over to me, and out of nowhere, she was like, "You have facial hair." and i said i knew, and i forgot to shave (it was barely visible, i don't grow much facial hair), and then she said "I'm going to have to send you home to shave."
she didn't send the other guy home to iron his shirt.

should I bring it to my GM's attention? because I don't think it's fair that she's targeting me.
i have a lot of other stories, but i don't feel like typing them.
and i don't think i'm a particularly bad worker. i never have any trouble with any other managers.

You could try to bring it to your GM attention, but there's no garantee that they'll do anything about it. Yes, it's unfair, everyone has a manager that's an ass to them, but sometimes there isn't much you can do about it. (Depressing but true.) If you can, try getting schduled to where you don't have to work with that manager.

I don't know how to put this without sounding rude, but why are so many people in this community so spineless about confronting their bitch-ass managers? Is the work atmosphere in the stores in the US of A so different from what it is here?

Because I'm used to being able to either confront the manager in question, or just bitch to the GM about it.

Or is it because our jobs are more secure here? Can you get fired from McD's there if you complain about a manager being out of line? Because here, it seems no one has problems with snapping back if a manager is being unreasonably aggressive/catty/whiny/whatever. Doesn't mean we don't respect them, I just personally won't stand being yelled at for no reason at all. (Like on Sunday I asked the manager on shift to get me some receipt paper rolls, and he got unreasonably pissy about it, until I snapped at him that he could've just fucking said "I can't, I'm busy", as I'd only asked him because I thought he was free. No need for a goddamn rant about how I can get my own damn receipt rolls, but he seems to have a habit of flying off the handle for the smallest things.)

pretty much yeah your jobs are more secure, and well maybe you all have more respect for other human beings...
here you CAN get fired or transfered or lied to if you do not agree with the way your managers say and do things... i pretty much had to learn to keep my mouth shut just so i can keep my job...

Many states in America, and more are going this way as time progresses, are "at will" when it comes to employment. This means the employer can fire an employee "at will," without giving a reason. At my store, only the store manager can fire someone, I don't know how widespread that is, but since the working environment is brutal and fast-paced, few store managers would do something about a situation like this: nothing is technically "wrong," the store is still making money, not getting sued, and if the employee quits over it, it's much easier to train a new crew person than to solve the problem.

In stores with less friendly environments, the GM will automatically take a manager's side even when it's blindingly obvious that the manager is in the wrong, because it's considered "wrong" to question authority for any reason, and the GM will view taking the crew person's side as an ac that will encourage more complaints over frivolous things.

I'd say the working environment in this country is very, very different than wherever you live. In the service industry in America, appearance and political correctness are more important than anything; in the OP's example above, you can see how this influences decision making. If we assume he's not exaggerating about how good of a worker he is and how much the whole rest of the grill team was ignoring their jobs, why would his manager yell at him instead of making the others work? Because yelling at him paints him to be the problem, and the problem is "solved" with a few harsh words. Getting the slackers to un-slack means you have to admit the store itself and the way management functions has a problem, and they simply won't, and probably can't do that.

First of all remember the manager's are there to do a job. Just because they are nice one day doesn't mean tomorrow they will be. They have alot of responsibiltites, and if you are not doing your job, they are there to tell you. Forgot to shave? If I hear that excuse I would send you home. How do you forget to shave? Stop whining, do your job, and no one will bother you. Managers won't be mean if the crew are doing the job they should be.

Haha, that's a pretty nice statement, but it falls rather short of being accurate. I've seen it happen before and been the target of a manager's misguided anger. It happens. Sometimes people -- managers included -- just take their stress out on other people.

That being said, there is a huge difference between a wrinkly shirt and facial hair. I would be much more inclined to let the shirt slide than the face.

yeah managers do get stressed sometimes and yes they take it out on crew. But should managers tell the crew things like shave and iron your shirt. I have better things to do with my time and if I had to constantly tell you there would come a time when the talking ended. I am simply saying if everyone did their job, manager's r less inclined to be nasty.

erm, mckinney, i'm not saying she shouldn't have sent me home to shave.
i'm saying she should've sent that other guy home to iron his shirt, then.
and i was doing my job the best i could. that's what upset me about it.
but whatever.
the situation seems to have resolved itself.
we've been getting along again.
which is great. because i love her to death.
but fwiw, i found out three other people complained about similar problems with the same manager.

oh, and none of that would BE a problem if they'd properly train people in every area.
instead of throwing someone in an area they were never trained in and expecting them to work miracles.
